MLM Sucks – The REAL MLM Scheme
ByMulti-level Marketing (MLM) as an industry has been debated over for several decades now. Some say MLM sucks, some say mlm is a scheme. Others say it’s a great way for the average Joe to make money…
And we could go over all of the stats about how 98%-99% of all people that signup in an MLM will never make money. We could talk about the Amway tools ripoff or how Monavie sells overpriced bottles of juice (neither of these things are my opinion, by the way… It’s just the crap all over the internet that gets debated).
Let’s put all of that stuff to the side for a moment and hone in on this one personal experience of mine that totally sums up MY “truth about MLM”… I’m talking about the secret that all of the big pins and heavy hitters won’t talk about.
One of my mentors mentioned this to me as to why he STOPPED growing his MLM business all together and started focusing on Direct Sales/GPT/Get-Paid-Today opportunities and passive income streams.
He said it was because he got tired of “babysitting adult children”.
Woah! That phrase hit me upside the head like a two-by-four. Babysitting adult children?
But he was right. You see, I didn’t believe him until I started growing a downline of several hundred people. Instead of spending most of your time golfing and on the beach like they show you in the lifestyle videos, you’re spending 8-10 hours a day coaching people, doing 3-way calls, training webinars, creating your own systems, and MANAGING all of it. It just becomes a better paying J-O-B, and you get the opportunity to call yourself a “business owner”… woopidy-doo!
You see, when the “price of entry” into your business is $50-$200, you’re going to sponsor a BUNCH of broke people with broke mentalities. That’s not to say you’ll get some sharp people too. But MLMs stay in business not because of the 100 leaders buying the products. The stay in business off of the thousands of SHEEP attending their hotel meetings, quarterly functions, and team meetings. Yea, I said it: SHEEP.
I know – I was one of them.
I was herded around for YEARS because I really didn’t have the GUTS to take the actions to build my business. See, I’m honest
I was an “adult child”. A big baby.
The REAL problem, though, was that I just had no want to take those actions. I didn’t want to face that REJECTION that I got when I tried to get a phone number from someone I had just met at the mall so I could pitch them on my business later. I wasted SOOO much time “pretending” to build my business because I just hated talking to total strangers and get them excited about my business opportunity. Especially because they just weren’t the people I should have been talking to anyways.
Then, something happened. I came across some information that totally changed my life.
I figured out how people were actually getting calls from people that they had never met, and these people were BEGGING to become part of a business opportunity.
Yep, instead of wasting time at the malls you can actually attract people TO YOU.
In the last few months alone, I’ve been able to create over 700 leads for my business without leaving my house. In addition to that, my leads have PAID ME to be my leads! I’ve grown my business and created over $20,000 in profits over the past 2 months. This is WAY different than MLM.
To see my recruiting secrets go to Explode-My-Business.com … just be careful – you may make a TON of money and have to go tell your upline that “MLM sucks”…

I think a lot of that stems from the fact that people are more worried about the size of their downline than they are about its quality.
If you don’t recruit babies, you aren’t forced to babysit.
I guess that’s my theory, in a nutshell.

Very good post.
When I started and had a small downline its was fine to help people, but when it grows it gets very difficult, if I wanted to use Skype for a family call I would have to be double quick at putting an offline status or I would get bombarded, then you have the emails, “how do I do this ““you weren’t online when you said you would be” and some really stroppy messages.
People should Google their questions when they are small like how do I embed a video or what’s an auto responder, all the answers are out there, it’s just they think it is easier to pester me, now don’t get me wrong I set out to give as much help as I can to my downline, but people really do need to take responsibility for their own business.
A sponsor is there to help not run the business.

Hey Bobby and Mark – thanks for your responses.
I agree that as long as you don’t sponsor babies you won’t have to “babysit”, but herein lies the problem. Most MLM reps out there are starving to get people in their downline and they’ll recruit whoever they can just to try and fulfill an “ego thing” and think they’re being productive.
The problem is you’re not sponsoring entrepreneurs. You’re sponsoring people with a dream.. No wait, not a dream… They have a “wish”. (that’s a whole ‘nother blog post for later.. haha).
That’s why many people have gone to companies promoting high ticket businesses. The quality of people getting into your business is much higher (typically) when your entry fee is $3k+. They’re professionals that understand they’ll need to do some work!
And Mark – that’s kinda where I was only a few months ago. I spent probably 50 hours putting together a training site w/ tons of videos, and I’d still have people calling me asking how to add messages to their autoresponder series.. “Did ya check the training site I spent all that time making, dude!?” haha
Every business has it’s disadvantages, we just gotta take the bad with the good..

I believe success comes with a decision to be different and not be a regular sheep anymore. Most people don’t believe so but mindset is extremely important. Overcoming your fears is the most important skill to master. If you overcome your fears you can be successful marketing online and offline. Adam I like the system you have put together and are using, it is inspiring me to do the same.

Adam,
I think that the real problem is not MLM, it’s more the fact that not everyone is an entrepreneur. It can be taught but it takes time.Entrepreneurship does not come naturally to most people.
You may say that Mona Vie sells overpriced juice, however the proof is in the pudding as they say. Mona Vie is one of the fastest growing companies around! In just 4 years! (By the way I am not with Mona Vie)So I would suggest that MLM is alive and kicking and many of the older MLM companies with wellness products are growing at a time when the economy is suffering.

@Duncan – I agree to a point.. On the “company level” there are many mlms that have experienced tremendous growth over the past 5-10 years.
But, still, with most mlm’s the independent rep needs to sponsor a small country to make any real money..
I’m not anti-mlm.. I’d just rather not wait 10 years to make any real money.
